Beginner German 1 (A1)

The TMM training program German, Level A1, All Skills forms the basis of the following lessons. The course develops your ability to understand and to express yourself verbally and in writing. You will speak German confidently with activities designed to perfect your pronunciation and to improve your command of German grammar.

You will learn German words for everyday objects and expressions for practical situations such as meeting people, buying clothing and finding your way around in the city. You will be able to describe yourself and your family, say where you come from and describe routine activities.

Lektion 1. Sich vorstellen

• Learn to introduce yourself and give some personal details such as where you come from and how old you are.
• Learn the personal pronouns.
• Learn the present tense of the verb "to be": "sein."

Lektion 2. Kleider kaufen

• Learn vocabulary for clothing, including how to describe clothing with adjectives such as colors.
• Learn more about how nouns "work" in German - noun gender, describing nouns with adjectives, using the demonstrative adjective "dieser" ("this/these").
• Lektion 3. Landeskunde.
  Words and grammar are only parts of a system of communication … the cultural context is also important. These brief lessons provide an insight into an aspect of German culture.

Lektion 4. Zu Hause

• Learn vocabulary for housing and furniture.
• Learn how to describe where things are - prepositions of location.

Lektion 5. Zu Besuch in Hamburg

• Learn about some major cities in German-speaking countries.
• Learn vocabulary for describing a family.
• Talk about things with which you are familiar and are not familiar (the verb "kennen").
• Learn how to form questions - question words and word order.
• Learn the simple past tense of the verb "sein".
• Lektion 6. Landeskunde.

Lektion 7. Identität

• Review and expand your ability to talk about yourself: your nationality, age, family relationships, etc.
• Review and expand your use of personal pronouns in German.

Lektion 8. Aussehen

• Learn additional vocabulary and adjectives for describing oneself and one's clothing.
• Learn vocabulary for parts of the body and the face.
• Review the present tense of "sein," "haben" and the present tense of verbs.

Lektion 9. Rechnen und Lesen

• Learn how to spell and to express numbers in German.
• Describe your location and position.
• Learn vocabulary and expressions for sharing your opinions.
• Review formation of questions and the question words.
• Lektion 10. Landeskunde.

Lektion 11. Zeitangaben

• Learn how to talk about time: the hours, months, seasons and years.

When you have completed Lektion 11, take the Language Achievement Test in Tell Me More. You will find it on your TMM Homepage by clicking the "Tests" tab. This assessment becomes available when you have completed thirty-six hours of practice with Tell Me More.
